NSEE Special Interest Groups (SIG)
The affinity groups listed below are this organization's attempt to provide an opportunity for discourse, reflection and collaboration among practicioners and researchers interested in the development of a deeper understanding of the application of experiential learning in a variety of settings.
This group explores the various ways experiential learning takes place in the classroom context. Instructional strategies, experiential activities, simulations and games are shared in order to promote experiential learning in the classroom. Workshops are designed to provide educators with practical tools to use in the classroom across a variety of disciplines and age groups.
Arts & Culture - Arts
The primary purpose of this SIG is to be a support for those who are interested in or who work within the arts and culture area. The SIG seeks to make others aware of the opportunities that exist within arts and culture and to promote the arts as part of the process of learning. The SIG meets annually at the NSEE national conference to share current events, national legislative changes affecting arts and culture, program profiles, program improvement strategies and problem solving ideas.
This group addresses a wide range of issues involving the evaluation of program processes and outcomes in experiential education. It focuses on the application of evaluation methods to programs at all levels of education.
The career development SIG focuses on the connection between experiential education and career decisions. The SIG helps educators explore and develop intentional experiential programs which enable students to make more informed career decisions. This is accomplished through topical workshops, publications, and conference presentations. The career development SIG welcomes everyone wishing to help others integrate career and life decision making skills into experiential learning programs.
Deliberative Democracy,Environmental Studies and Social Justice - Social Justice
The Social Justice SIG addresses questions relating to social justice issues and their relationship to experiential education. Members discuss issues such as: the organizational and pedagogical methods that are likely to encourage just relationships among faculty, students, and the communities in which they work; how discussions of class inequality, racism and other forms of social injustice become tools for social change; and who soaks for the community in establishing and implementing community-based learning activities.
This SIG discusses issues related to international study and the education of students about countries and cultures other than their own. It deals with issues and proposes workshops, training and skill building related to multiculturalism.
Internships & Co-operative Education - Internships
The purpose of the group is to provide a national forum for colleagues who direct or coordinate programs, supervise interns, or have an interest in internship programs. Members represent administrators and faculty who can assist each other in developing and refining quality internship programs within their institutions. Discussions range from how to start and administer an internship program to the theoretical questions about facilitating learning objectives, outcomes, and assessment.
This group serves as a forum to discuss and respond to current issues regarding combining community and public service with the philosophical and pedagogical basis of experiential education. The SIG promotes good practices and works to strengthen and support college, university, and K-12 programs and courses as well as community-based organizations and programs that link service with learning.
