FYI for professionals in Pennsylvania (and anyone else who might be interested!).

Senator Jane Orie has reintroduced a bill to amend the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act. Her bill, called SB 280, is an attempt to extend protection from employment discrimination to include discrimination based on marital or familial status.

The current act protects people from discrimination based on "race, color, religious creed, ancestry, age, sex, national origin, handicap or disability, use of a guide or support animal because of blindness, deafness or physical handicap of the user or because the user is a handler or trainer of support or guide animals." The federal government and most states offer protection from discrimination based on marital or familial status, but Pennsylvania chose not to include this in the Human Relations Act that was enacted in 1954. Omission of this important language permits employers to ask job applicant questions about dependent children, marital status, childcare arrangements, and family insurance needs. This has made it especially difficult for single parents and for stay at home moms to re-enter the workforce. It can also be an issue for career changers.
